“Belief in a cruel god makes a cruel man.”
In 1989, at the age of 22, Alexandra Amor moved to Vancouver, BC and joined what she thought was a meditation class. Ten years later, she escaped what had become a mind control cult run by a self-serving, power-hungry guru. Leaving behind all her friends, her spiritual community, her sense of self, and the man she loved, Alexandra moved out into the world searching for healing, and to understand what had happened to her. Cult, A Love Story is the award-winning memoir that shows by example how we are drawn into high-demand (cultic) groups. And what recovery from that experience looks like.
Message from Alexandra:
Cult, A Love Story explores my personal journey of descent into the hell that is a mind control cult. And it is also a story of self-discovery and of the opportunities for healing that are available to us when we leave a cult.
The book was written not as a vitriolic screed against my cult leader (because in my opinion that kind of memoir serves no one), but rather as a step-by-step guide, from personal experience, about how and why one gets drawn into a cult, and what it is that keeps us trapped once we’re there. My intention was to use my experience and research about what had happened to me to educate others and to bring more understanding to everyone about how cults work.
I tie my experiences in to Robert Lifton’s Eight Criteria of Thought Reform to model and explain in real life terms how cults work and why those who are in a cult (or high demand group) are unable to see what is happening to them.
The book also chronicles the beginnings of my journey of cult recovery as a guide for those who are on their own journey, and for those family members and friends who want to understand what their loved one is going through.
Cult, A Love Story has been read by cult survivors and their families all over the world, from remote British Columbia, Canada to Australia, Europe, the Middle East and beyond.

“This excellent memoir reveals how a charismatic, manipulative spirit medium can use love for God and neighbor as a hook to drag a small group of devotees into her cynical web of impossible goals for self-perfection. After a heroic struggle for insight, Alexandra Amor was one of the cult members who broke the abusive spell.”
