I’m Alexandra Amor and I’ve been writing and publishing professionally since 2009.

That’s me giving a reading at the public library in Vancouver in 2016. (Sorry about the blurry photo.) I started publishing before print-on-demand was a thing, and before selling a book as an ebook was even an option. Today I’m a published author in several genres and in all the book formats you can name: ebook, paperback, hardback, large print and audiobook. My books are available in online bookstores, traditional bookstores, gift shops, and libraries.

And, much to my delight, I earn revenue every month from my books. And because of one of my books I’m a public speaker and have been featured in a documentary.

All that is to say, I’ve learned a LOT since 2009. And there is also a tremendous amount of water under the publishing bridge since those early days. The Kindle Gold Rush has come and gone. The days of formatting our own books with clunky tools have also thankfully come and gone. There are so many amazing tools and tricks available to writers now that have made publishing much simpler and easier.

But where do new authors begin? And what are the scams and pitfalls they should look out for? What are some reasonable expectations for the cost of self-publishing or the acceptance of a book by a traditional publisher?
